Historic significance

The growth of this community was directly related to the development of the Welland canals and commerce and industry associated with Great Lakes shipping during the nineteenth century. The commercial core, located on Lakeport Road, Lock Street and Hogan's Alley is characterized by the architectural styles of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries – ranging from red and buff brick to Italianate.
